Frontgrid, a pioneering company in virtual reality entertainment, developed ParadropVR, an innovative paragliding game that combines motion-based hardware and virtual reality. In fact, ParadropVR simulates the experience of paragliding, complete with realistic inertial effects. The game immerses players in a virtual environment where they can steer a paraglider, experiencing rapid rises and drops, while collecting points along the way.
In 2020, Frontgrid sought a reliable linear motion system for vertical movements in their ParadropVR simulator. The key requirement was to create rapid vertical accelerations across a wide range of motion profiles (from 2-4 mm to 850 mm), to simulate the sensation of dropping and rising quickly, enhancing the realism of the VR experience. Another significant challenge was ensuring the system could handle a diverse range of user weights, as the actuator needed to support the entire payload of the mounted seat on its carriage.
Frontgrid partnered with Rollon to find the ideal solution for the ParadropVR simulator. The choice fell on the Smart family of products – belt actuators that combine performance, resistance and versatility – known for their reliable performance in similar applications.
