Moving overhanging loads with telescopic guides: a Rollon challenge

Report

What is the most challenging thing a telescopic linear guide can be subjected to? Certainly the handling of a overhanging weight: a rather common condition in many production contexts and in some applications. The guide should provide stiffness, no flexing, and smooth movement even at maximum extension. Centering all of these conditions requires implementing a guide with exceptional strength and robustness characteristics.

Mechatronic Solutions relies on Rollon

Mechatronic Solutions, a manufacturer of automation accessory equipment, designed a cart for one of its customers to be implemented alongside machines in a machine tending task. Drawers in the cart contain equipment such as molds and cutting tools. The structure and drawers had to basically meet two criteria:

– Support a weight of at least 272 kg without flexing
– Being able to open up totally

Obviously, the conditions of rigidity and absence of bending had to apply also (and especially) to the maximum extraction.
Initial attempts to engineer the solution saw the application of steel guides with a square profile and they all failed to meet both application requirements: maximum extraction, maximum rigidity and strength. The Mechatronics engineers, who have many years of experience with our products, approached Rollon’s own engineers to discuss the structural and engineering characteristics of the application and receive guidance on how to design the most suitable guide solution.

The advantages of Telescopic Rail guides by Rollon

Mechatronic Solutions chose to use guides from the Telescopic Rail range to develop the application, thus integrating two guides from the DSS-43-690 model. These telescopic guides are made of cold-drawn high carbon steel and incorporate caged bearings as rolling elements. Their load capacity – which can reach 3,600 kg per pair of rails – and their reduced bending even at maximum extraction (which can reach 150% of the stroke), have responded very well to the requirements.

Telescopic Rails have hardened raceways treated with electrolytic zinc plating in accordance with ISO2081. These finishing processes (plus additional anti-corrosive treatments available upon request) guarantee continuous use with very high reliability even in hostile environments and excellent sliding quality.

Functional features

Telescopic Rail guides offer telescopic extensions up to 4 meters in bi-directional extension. These functional characteristics make them particularly suitable for application in different sectors, such as railway, automotive, aeronautics, food & beverage, intralogistics and in the field of industrial machines. Combining characteristics of rigidity, bending strength and maximum sliding reliability, they can handle very large loads with the guarantee of high positioning reproducibility.

In fact, the product family includes partial and full extension telescopic guides and consists of 8 series of various sections. The deflection resistant central components are available in the S, double T or square versions. Discover the telescope guide that best suits your needs.
